I’m celebrating my 34th birthday this week, and it’s kind of a tradition in blogging land to share things about yourself on your special day. So without further ado, 34 things about me!
- I’m a creative soul. Over the years I’ve worked with many different forms of art as well as writing, crafting, and photography. It’s an instinct, much like breathing, and is such an important part of me that I can’t imagine a day without creating or dreaming about something.
- I adore the color blue! It’s always been my favorite. In fact, I got married in a light blue wedding dress!
- Chocolate makes everything better. If you give me chocolate with caramel we’ll be best friends forever!
- Coffee is my life line these days. I used to hate the taste of it, but once my sister-in-law showed me how to disguise the taste with milk and chocolate syrup, my world has changed! When people ask how I manage to juggle house projects, raising three young kiddos, and creating the blog, my answer is always “coffee!”
- Wine is nice too! Especially the sweet ones that taste like juice.
- Naps are awesome. I wish I could take one every day!
- Reading is my favorite way to relax. I tend to read a lot of nonfiction like memoirs and biographies. I’ve learned so much and expanded my beliefs because of so many wonderful authors who were brave enough to share their stories.
- I also like classic novels like Anne of Green Gables and Little Women. I was totally born in the wrong time period!
- I’ve always loved vintage items, well before decorating with vintage things was trendy. I’ve collected vintage family pieces my entire life, and many of those items are now displayed in my home.
- Old houses make me swoon. Living in our castle is a dream come true!
- Crystal chandeliers make my heart happy!
- I also have a slight obsession with architectural salvage pieces from old buildings. And I’m loving antique sinks right now.
- I’m a serious thrifter. I’ve found the most amazing treasures from second hand places, yard sales, Craigslist, and even inside of dumpsters. It’s a fantastic combination of recycling and saving money, and the thrill of the hunt is so fun!
- I’m a romantic soul, and I’m married to a wonderful guy! We’re coming up on our ten year wedding anniversary, and it’s been quite a journey together. There have been times so beautiful I can’t believe this is really our life, and times that were so hard I look back and can’t fathom how we managed to keep putting one foot in front of the other. Being married has taught me to be strong, kind, forgiving, and thankful.
- Being a mom to our three kiddos is the most amazing and challenging thing I’ve ever done! They are “my world, my heart, my love, and my joy!” (I tell them that every night when I tuck them into bed).
- I have a twin sister. We don’t look alike, but we sound exactly alike. And we have a special twin sixth sense. Once she called me while I was at Sherwin Williams picking out paint colors. She was also at Sherwin Williams picking out paint colors (we live in different states). We were looking at the same blue color for our boys’ rooms! It’s a twin thing. We often call each other late at night to discuss vital décor questions and constantly text pictures of our projects. All of the unflattering cell phone pictures of me doing construction work that I post on the blog were originally sent to my twin sister to show her our progress.
- I have a lot of sisters and brothers. I grew up in a family with seven kids. And now that everyone is grown and some of us are married with kids of our own, family get togethers at our house are bursting at the seams! So much fun!
- I used to be an elementary school teacher before I had my kiddos. I loved seeing my sweet students grow and learn throughout the school year.
- My Grandma K. researched our family history and created an impressive collection of genealogy. I spent one summer as a kid reading through the binders of research, including a farming journal from the 1800’s that detailed the weather and crops for six years. I was a very cool kid, obviously.
- Journaling and writing are amazing! I’ve been writing my whole life. In this current phase of life I write on my blog instead of the spiral notebooks I used in the past. I have boxes of journals starting from when I was in elementary school that I’ve saved and occasionally go back and read.
- Growing up I was incredibly shy. Now I just want to hug everyone and spread kindness!
- I’m all about encouraging and empowering women. I want everyone to feel like they can conquer the world!
- I’m incredibly proud of where I am in my life, and I’m not talking about our castle, although it is very cool. I’m proud of how I’ve learned and grown and the strength of spirit I’ve developed. I can remember people telling me when I was in high school that those years were going to be the best years of my life. And they were nice years. But I learned so much in my twenties, and I’m loving my thirties! I feel much more content and confident, and it’s lovely!
- My favorite Pandora stations are set to play swing music and French café music. Dance parties in our kitchen are epic! It’s like stepping into a broadway musical from the 1940s!
- Gene Kelly in Singing in the Rain was my first movie star crush.
- I’m known to burst into song and dance whenever the mood strikes!
- Someday I plan to write a book. Probably a memoir of some sort. This blog is great practice! Have I mentioned how much I love you all for visiting my little corner of the internet?
- When my kids are older I’d love to travel again. Any recommendations where I should go?
- Yoga pants are my favorite. Sometimes I think about working outside the home, but then I’d have to put on real pants and wake up early….
- I actually do take a yoga class in my yoga pants. It’s such a fantastic way to exercise! And we laugh a lot, which is great for the abs.
- I’m always running late. Seriously, the other day when I picked up my son from school the teacher who runs the car rider line didn’t recognize me because I was on time and near the front of the line, and she’s used to seeing me at the very end of the line of cars!
- I am a night owl! 10:00 PM is when I love to write because the creativity just flows! If I could stay up until 3:00 AM and sleep in until 11:00 I’d be so happy. My kids (and the rest of the world) aren’t on board with that plan, though.
- Perfection is overrated. So is comparison. I try to avoid both in life.
- After losing a friend to cancer in college, I realized that aging is a privilege. Each new candle on my birthday cake is a gift, and I try very hard not to take life for granted. I’m grateful for this beautifully crazy life!
Have a beautiful day!
Sandy

I’m so jealous of your dream job! Lucky you! You know, one day the whole “older by 10 minutes” thing might not be so exciting. Haha! At least I’m taller! Love you!

HAPPY WONDERFUL GLORIOUS JOYFUL ANOTHER BIRTHDAY TO YOU!!! Seriously, we have so much in common. Super fun to nod along, affirming each fact as I sit in Starbucks and I read your list. Make sure you experience a Rooftop Film Club event in London, go fishing in a Norwegian fjord, stay in a romantic estate in the countrysides of England, eat brats in Old Town Tallin, Estonia and walk along the beautiful, peaceful waterfronts of Finland. Those are just a few of my favorite {travel} things. Blessings, dear. 🙂
