As a creative soul, I’ve learned over the years the importance of taking care of myself. Things like writing, reading, yoga, and visiting inspiring places help to fill me back up. Creativity is as natural and necessary to me as breathing. That’s one of the main reasons I started this blog. When I was staying home with my young kiddos, I needed something creative to do to keep me sane! The home improvement projects, writing, styling, and photography filled a very real need in my life, and I’m so grateful for this wonderful experience.
A few weekends ago I was feeling the effects of all the hard work that had gone into staring my shop. I was content with life in general, I just felt very restless. I made sure I was doing all the day to day things that usually help me feel better, but I sensed I also needed a change of scenery. A quick trip to shake me out of my routine and an inspiring new environment to fill me back up. Plus, I kept wandering around my house singing, “I want adventure in the great wide somewhere, I want it more than I can teeeeeeell!” in my best Belle voice, which is usually a pretty clear indication that it’s time to hit the road!
So, I packed my bags and headed down to Kentucky to visit my dear friend Amanda. There is something magical about taking a trip by myself. The drive alone was like a vacation! I listened to my choice of music and podcasts, no one cried or screamed at me from the backseat, and I stopped and wandered around IKEA on the way there and back! It was amazing!
When Amanda and I have a girls’ weekend we eat delicious food, drink good wine, and stay up way too late talking. And we always end up working on some sort of project. She is one of the people in my life who understands the world of blogging, starting a small business, and most importantly having a creative spirit. We spent Sunday morning painting the dinning room at her house while we talked. And it was so nice, because she instinctively understands and can relate to what I share. When you find friends in life who get you, make sure you hold on to them! It’s such a gift.
The light was so dreamy Sunday afternoon that I just had to take some quick photos of Amanda’s house before I left! I love that these aren’t styled pictures, just day to day life in her home. The way she incorporates colors, patterns, and artwork makes me so happy!
Friends, no matter how crazy or busy life gets, I hope you find ways to take care of yourself and feel inspired. It’s so important! And even if you can’t manage to take a trip in this specific season of your life, sometimes just dreaming and planning a future adventure can help.
Tell me, friends, what fills you back up and inspires you?
